{"id":975,"date":"2011-08-28T00:12:44","date_gmt":"2011-08-28T00:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?p=975"},"modified":"2011-09-03T21:59:27","modified_gmt":"2011-09-03T21:59:27","slug":"math-around-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=975","title":{"rendered":"Math Around Us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-976\" href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=976\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-976\" title=\"4 x 6 array\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DSCN0906-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>If we take the time to notice our surroundings, I think we may be surprised at just how much math we have in our every day environment.\u00a0 Take the photo to the left.\u00a0 It&#8217;s something most kids are familiar with.\u00a0 But do they know that it represents the multiplication problem 4 x 6.\u00a0 If they count the number of rows (4) and then multiply by the number of columns (6), they can quickly discover how many total eggs there are.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s more.\u00a0 In the space of my kitchen, I quickly found these\u00a0two other multiplication arrays.\u00a0 One, 3 x 4, was in the mat by the<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-977\" href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=977\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-977\" title=\"array\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DSCN0908-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-978\" href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=978\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-978\" title=\"array\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DSCN0907-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> sliding glass door, and the other 2 x 3, was on the wall.\u00a0 If I looked closer, I&#8217;m sure I could find more.<\/p>\n<p>I then walked into the family room and noticed the rotational symmetry of the small rectangular sections that made up circles on the floor rug.\u00a0 I could figure out the angle measurement of each section by dividing the number of sections into 360 degrees.                                                                                                                    <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-979\" href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=979\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-979\" title=\"rotational symmetry\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DSCN0905-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-980\" href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=980\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-980\" title=\"concentric circles\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/DSCN0911-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>I then realized that the rug was made up of concentric circles, circles within circles that share a common center.
