\"\"<\/a>Ryan just learned how to use the ATM machine at our bank. \u00a0It’s Sunday and the bank is closed but Ryan really wanted to deposit several checks that he’d been holding on to.<\/p>\n

“No problem”, I said. \u00a0“Just use the ATM.”<\/p>\n

It occurred to me that maybe he had no idea how to use an ATM, after all, he’s only had his checking account for several months. \u00a0But he didn’t bat an eye when I recommended it, so I passed it off. \u00a0Besides, if he had a problem, he could always call.<\/p>\n

So off he went.<\/p>\n

He got home a few minutes ago. \u00a0“Oh my gosh,” he started. \u00a0“I had to go to back to my car three times before I had everything I needed to deposit the checks.”<\/p>\n

Inside I chuckled. \u00a0“Like what?”<\/p>\n

“Well, I didn’t have a pen. \u00a0Then I forgot my ATM card. \u00a0But there was this really nice guy who helped me out. \u00a0In fact, he said he had just helped his 16-year old do the exact same thing about three hours earlier. \u00a0His son goes to Jesuit but he knows Keenan from Whitney (High School). \u00a0It was so weird. \u00a0It’s a small world. \u00a0Oh yeah, and he told me not to sign the back of the check in the middle.”<\/p>\n

“Uh,” I started to defend myself, “There’s usually a line on the back of the check where you write your signature.”<\/p>\n

“Yeah, mom, but you just told me to sign the back. \u00a0I wasn’t looking for a line to write my name on.” \u00a0Ah, those little details that get lost\u00a0in too much familiarity. \u00a0I thought back to Nathan and his first trip to the ATM<\/a>. \u00a0At least he<\/em> called me.<\/p>\n

“Anyway, I got the checks deposited, so it’s all good.” \u00a0He turned and walked away.<\/p>\n

Small world, indeed. \u00a0I hope Keenan doesn’t tell this dad that Ryan’s mom is a kids’ personal finance educator.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
