\"\"<\/a>I cut an article out of the paper today to share with Nathan. \u00a0He had invested in\u00a0Walmart\u00a0several years ago because he liked the idea of them going green. \u00a0He knew that a big company like Walmart\u00a0could make a difference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He was right. \u00a0According to the article Walmart is now holding farmers accountable for their farming practices. \u00a0It’s recycling its used plastic into dog beds, producing smaller laundry detergent bottles to reduce packaging, and it’s transporting its goods in hybrid 18-wheelers that, as the word ‘hybrid’ would imply, uses less fuel.<\/p>\n

I liked the idea that Nathan’s investing strategy was driven by his desire for his dollars to be used in socially conscious ways. \u00a0 Say what you will about\u00a0Walmart, but when a company makes a commitment to train one million workers in sustainable farming practices, I’m in.<\/p>\n

The fact that Walmart is going to save a lot of money by doing these things and, as a result, raise their income by 10 – 15%, shows that going green is a smart, bottom-line thing to do. \u00a0It happens to be a win\/win.<\/p>\n

So I was excited to share the article with Nathan. \u00a0 But I was even more excited to share it with Ryan. \u00a0When he came down for breakfast, I waited until he had blended his breakfast (he doesn’t eat cereal) and read most of the comics, before non-chalantely bringing up the article.<\/p>\n

Ryan has not invested in\u00a0Walmart. \u00a0But what he has invested in (decisions made through his stomach and enjoyment of movies), have made a killing. \u00a0Unbelievable killing. \u00a0They’ve more than quadrupled in value in a very short time. \u00a0I kick myself every time I think about it. \u00a0I should have followed suit.<\/p>\n

So my interest in sharing the\u00a0Walmart\u00a0article was purely selfish. \u00a0I was watching his reaction. \u00a0Is he excited about the direction Walmart\u00a0is taking? \u00a0Does he think it might be a good investment? \u00a0Is he going to go in on it? \u00a0What’s Ryan thinking??<\/p>\n

“Cool,” he said. \u00a0“Do you think I should invest in it?” he asked.<\/p>\n

What?! \u00a0That wasn’t what I was waiting for. \u00a0He was supposed to tell ME whether or not it was a good investment. \u00a0After all, he had done it several times before…isn’t there some sort of vibe he gets?<\/p>\n

“I dunno. \u00a0What do you think?” I asked, trying to appear disinterested.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know,” he replied. \u00a0“I did really well on my last investments. \u00a0But I got lucky. \u00a0 I don’t think that going to happen twice.”<\/p>\n

It was then that I realized that he was a smarter investor than I was. \u00a0Here I was waiting to see if he got the “feeling” again while he was trying to consider the details about whether or not it would make a good investment.<\/p>\n

He closed the comics and walked away. \u00a0Hmmmm. \u00a0Didn’t seem too interested. \u00a0Must not be feeling the vibe. \u00a0There I go again. \u00a0But, I’ll tell ya, if Ryan does decide to invest in\u00a0Walmart, his mom is going to follow his lead…just in case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
