Families really do want to come to your Family Math Night. They\u2019re just busy\u2026 with life. One simple strategy that has consistently boosted attendance for me is offering food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking dinner off a family\u2019s to\u2011do list makes their evening a little easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, providing food can add to your <\/em>already full plate. So here\u2019s how I recently solved that for my Math Medley Family Math Night <\/a>event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, Chick\u2011fil\u2011A<\/em> donated 100 of their delicious chicken sandwiches for our event. One quick phone call was all it took.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many businesses have a community\u2011giving component and genuinely enjoy supporting local events\u2014especially ones that bring families together around hands\u2011on math.\u00a0Chick\u2011fil\u2011A<\/em>\u00a0was excited to be part of something meaningful for their community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, I\u2019ve also reached out to local pizza places. Several have donated food, and others have offered generous discounts when a full donation wasn\u2019t possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calling is a great way to connect, but email or a letter works just as well. Here\u2019s an example letter<\/a> you can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you do secure donated food, be sure to get a head count ahead of time so you have enough for everyone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For last month’s event, we set up several cafeteria tables in the back of the multi-use room designated for eating. Families would eat as space became available at one of the tables. To make sure the food stayed at the food tables, I created table tents in both\u00a0English<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Spanish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Because I live in a pretty mild climate, I\u2019ve often had families enjoy their meal outside at picnic tables. In this photo, taken from inside the multi\u2011use room, you can see families through the windows happily eating their donated pizza outdoors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve always been fortunate to have the PTA\/PTO provide free water for families at my events. And after a delicious chicken sandwich or a slice of pizza, what does everyone naturally gravitate toward\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where things get fun and it can double as a great fundraising opportunity. Just look at the mouth\u2011watering treats you can showcase at a dessert table. And because I\u2019m always looking for ways to involve students, putting them in charge of selling the treats turns this into an amazing student\u2011run math station. It\u2019s hands\u2011on, empowering, and full of real\u2011world math.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
