I was in Ryan’s room this morning looking for his graphing calculator (that’s my next blog entry!), when I discovered a piece of paper that, apparently Ryan needs to fill out.\u00a0 It was titled, Whitney High Track and Field Goal Sheet<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Very cool.\u00a0 His track coaches\u00a0are making the athletes think about and write down their goals for the season.\u00a0 The first goal was pre-determined by the coaches:\u00a0 to have fun.\u00a0 Nice.\u00a0 Then, athletes need to write their individual goals and their team goals.\u00a0 Individual goals were described as selfish goals<\/em> and team goals were described as not selfish<\/em>.\u00a0 I thought that was cute.<\/p>\n

Now that I know about this assignment, I am curious to see what Ryan writes down.\u00a0 Although, proud mommy moment, he already accomplished one of his goals:\u00a0 to beat the school record for a mile.\u00a0 He did it in 5 minutes 2 seconds, beating the record by 3 seconds.<\/p>\n

I’m a huge believer in setting personal goals.\u00a0 And I’m just as passionate about teaching kids to do the same.\u00a0 When we have goals, we have a destination.\u00a0 Destinations are good.\u00a0 They offer direction.<\/p>\n

The part that we often fail to do, however, is come up with a plan to help us arrive at that destination.\u00a0 Let’s say Ryan wants to run a sub-five minute mile and he wants to do it before the league meet in May.\u00a0 What are the steps he will need to take in order to achieve his goal?\u00a0 First and foremost, he’s going to need to practice.\u00a0 Great.\u00a0 How often?\u00a0 What exercises will he need to do to build up strength?\u00a0 What do his quarter mile splits need to be?\u00a0 Etc.\u00a0 He needs a plan.<\/p>\n

It’s the same with financial goals.\u00a0 So you want to save $3000 in your emergency fund.\u00a0 What specific steps do you need to take in order to make that happen?\u00a0 Will you automate some of your paycheck into your savings account?\u00a0 Will you cut back to two lattes a week instead of five?\u00a0 And when, exactly, do you plan on achieving this goal?\u00a0 You need a date and it needs to be written on the calendar.<\/p>\n

Let’s teach financial goal setting to our kids.\u00a0 Start small.\u00a0 I want to save $20 to buy such-and-such.<\/em>\u00a0 Achieving one gives motivation to set up another.\u00a0 Now I want to save $100 for a laptop.<\/em>\u00a0 Kids learn it can be done.\u00a0 That’s a very important lesson we need to teach them before they leave us for the wild\u00a0blue yonder.\u00a0 Unless, of course, you’d like them to stay…forever.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
