Has your brain ever been so saturated with thoughts that you render it useless?\u00a0 That’s what happened to me when I saw a bumper sticker on a car that read, “She who dies with the most jewels wins.”\u00a0\u00a0 It evoked so many emotions all I could clearly think was, Ahhhh<\/em>.<\/p>\n

When that went away, my\u00a0next thought was That is precisely the kind of attitude that contributed to all the dark stuff of 2009<\/em>.\u00a0 If my kids had been with me, they would have looked at me, rolled their eyes, and said something like It’s just a bumper sticker, mom<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I know it’s just a bumper sticker.\u00a0 And I\u00a0know that the driver is probably not on a mission\u00a0to\u00a0gather all the jewels she can get before she dies.\u00a0 But words mean<\/em>\u00a0something.\u00a0 And the clear message here is that what’s\u00a0 important in life is the accumulation of stuff.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our kids are exposed\u00a0to these kinds of messages on a daily basis.\u00a0 They see celebrities in huge houses driving fancy cars.\u00a0\u00a0Or\u00a0their friends buying (with their parents’ money) the latest technology.\u00a0 It’s impossible to watch t.v., take a ride in a car, or chat with your friends on Facebook without stuff\u00a0being peddled to us.\u00a0We are a consumerist culture.\u00a0 Which is not a bad thing…unless we become consumed by it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So what do we parents do?\u00a0 We do\u00a0double-duty to counter the hundreds of spend, accumulate more,\u00a0focus on stuff<\/em>\u00a0messages our kids get sent each and every\u00a0day.\u00a0 It’s up to us.\u00a0 Otherwise, unknowingly, our kids may develop an unhealthy attitude towards money.<\/p>\n

How do we do double-duty?\u00a0 We talk with our kids about the messages being sent via bumper stickers, billboards, t.v., etc.\u00a0 We ask them if they know what the message means?\u00a0 We ask them if they agree or disagree and why.\u00a0 We ask them what kind of life they would need to live in order to die with the most jewels.\u00a0\u00a0And we find out\u00a0what the important things in their lives really are.\u00a0 Those will enrich their lives far more than a chest full of jewels.<\/p>\n

So\u00a0what kind of car was Ms. Jewels driving?\u00a0\u00a0A Mercury Sable.\u00a0 Does that matter?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I’m just sayin’<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
