{"id":4495,"date":"2017-11-07T14:39:40","date_gmt":"2017-11-07T22:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=4495"},"modified":"2019-12-16T10:04:21","modified_gmt":"2019-12-16T18:04:21","slug":"what-do-you-notice-poster-fractions-on-the-geoboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=4495","title":{"rendered":"What Do You Notice? poster &#8211; Fractions on the Geoboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>I just hosted my sixth fabulous Family Math Night event of the school year and with it came another\u00a0new\u00a0<em>What Do You Notice?<\/em>\u00a0poster. \u00a0Here are the deets:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong>Title: \u00a0Fractions on the Geoboard<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mlsvc01-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/65e834fa001\/2de3e7bf-c36f-4780-bd51-70ce8773bb57.jpg\" width=\"472\" height=\"247\" name=\"ACCOUNT.IMAGE.268\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><strong>Skills<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>K-2:\u00a0\u00a0shapes, counting, area<\/p>\n<div>3-5:\u00a0 congruency, area, fractions, equivalent fractions<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Background Information:<\/strong>\u00a0This is similar to the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/familymathnight.com\/resources\/whatdoyounotice-details.php?KEY=SQUARES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" shape=\"rect\">Squares and More Squares<\/a><\/em>\u00a0poster.\u00a0 Like that one, this was designed around fractions but at a higher level.\u00a0 The dots for each square represent the dots on a regular geoboard.\u00a0 Each square is made up of 5 by 5 dots.\u00a0 If lines were drawn connecting each of the dots, the larger square would show 16 small squares (4 x 4 small squares).\u00a0 Each of these small squares represents one square unit.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>I divided each of the large squares into fourths.\u00a0 The third and fifth squares on the poster are the easiest representations of fourths.\u00a0 It is also easy to see equivalent fractions such as \u00bd = 2\/4.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Upper elementary students can figure out the area of the sections by counting the square units.\u00a0 Just like in the\u00a0<em>Squares and More Squares<\/em>\u00a0poster, I deliberately made different shapes with the same area because sometime students will think that because the shape is different, the area must be different, as well.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Some students may notice congruency.\u00a0 For example, in the first square, two of the sections are identical (congruent) even though the orientations are different.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Here&#8217;s what it looked like at the event:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mlsvc01-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/65e834fa001\/56dbb015-1549-4794-9fb1-2f963854b9dc.jpg\" width=\"295\" height=\"393\" name=\"ACCOUNT.IMAGE.264\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mlsvc01-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/65e834fa001\/2de3e7bf-c36f-4780-bd51-70ce8773bb57.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; width: 50%;\"><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><b> Skills:  <\/b> <br \/>K-2:  shapes, counting, area <br \/> 3-5:  congruency, area, fractions, equivalent fractions<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>This is similar to the Squares and More Squares poster.
