Last night I held my first Family Math Night event. \u00a0It was fabulous. \u00a0I had 31 student Station Facilitators – the most ever. \u00a0And every one of them did an amazing job. \u00a0Here’s a photo of them right before we opened the doors. \u00a0Can you find the principal in there?<\/div>\n

But what I really want to share with you are my upcoming What Do You Notice? <\/em>posters. \u00a0You get to see them before anyone else. \u00a0Except for the first one which I used last night. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/div>\n

As you know, I love the open-endedness to these posters. \u00a0They work just as well with Kindergartners as the do fifth and sixth graders. \u00a0Even the parents get pretty involved. \u00a0After each event, I post the poster on the Resources section of our website. \u00a0Click here<\/a> if you’re interested in checking some of the others out.<\/div>\n

So here’s the one I used last night. \u00a0It involves patterns in color and number, multiplication, division, algebra… \u00a0I included a Challenge!<\/em> question for those who wanted a, well, challenge. \u00a0By the way, those crayons are real. \u00a0I thought it would be a fun one to do at the beginning of the school year.<\/div>\n

Here’s a fun one that involves money. \u00a0Those soccer balls and bikes are real, too. \u00a0The wheels on the bikes even rotate! \u00a0At a high level, it involves simultaneous equations. \u00a0However, kids can use logic to figure out the cost of each item. \u00a0Kindergarteners can count bikes and balls and wheels. \u00a0And if they notice a dollar sign – fabulous!<\/div>\n

\u00a0This next one happened as a result of my scrounging around my math closet for – I don’t even remember what. \u00a0I ended up finding these from way back. \u00a0Can you tell what I was trying to mimic? \u00a0I’m excited to see what the kids come up with. \u00a0I hope someone notices fractions!<\/div>\n

\u00a0Then I got into another 3-D mood. \u00a0And since I’m focusing on our Gellin’ with Geometry<\/a> kit this year, I thought this would fit right in. \u00a0In the design of the boxes, uh, rectangular prisms, it was important that I use grid paper so the relationship between the numbers and the boxes could be made.<\/div>\n

\u00a0And, finally, those prisms were a nice segue into 2-D. \u00a0Again, using grid paper was important to the relationship.<\/div>\n

Participants who write something on a post-it and put it on the poster get an extra guess in the estimation jar<\/a>. \u00a0It’s a good little motivator to get them to give it a try. \u00a0Here’s a mom with her son who decided to add her thoughts to the poster.<\/div>\n
