Nathan had one of his friends over the other day.\u00a0 They were chatting about Christmas shopping.\u00a0 Apparently Valerie had most of her shopping done.\u00a0 Nathan – none.\u00a0 He’s not a big shopper.<\/p>\n

It has been my experience that girls are more apt to buy their friends Christmas gifts than boys…and enjoy the process.\u00a0 I\u00a0see this\u00a0in my nieces and in the daughters of\u00a0 my friends.\u00a0 Not so much with any of the boys.\u00a0 And as much as I don’t like generalizing, it’s hard to ignore the fact that girls are usually the ones who plan the parties, organize the potlucks, and buy the gifts.<\/p>\n

It’s not that Nathan doesn’t have any shopping to do.\u00a0 He has to buy a gift for Ryan and for the “White Elephant” gift exchange we’re having this year.\u00a0 A\u00a0gift for mom and dad would be nice.\u00a0 But gifts for friends?\u00a0 There seems to be some unspoken agreement among the group not to subject each other to the burden of shopping.<\/p>\n

But I like what Valerie had to say about her Christmas shopping this year.\u00a0\u00a0She and her friends\u00a0decided to do a Secret Santa.\u00a0 The reason?\u00a0 “To save money.”\u00a0 She said it so matter-of-factly, it was like she was\u00a0telling me the time.<\/p>\n

And I had to smile to myself.\u00a0 Maybe this next generation will be a little more saving-savvy than their parents.\u00a0 Maybe saving will simply be what normal people do.\u00a0 And a benefit of spending less?\u00a0 No shopping.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
