Nathan and Ryan received their second, and final,\u00a0soccer reffing checks in the mail yesterday.<\/p>\n
“How much are you expecting?” I asked.<\/p>\n
“A lot,” was the answer I received from both.\u00a0 And a lot it was!\u00a0 Nathan’s check came to $210 and Ryan’s came in at $164.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But as\u00a0nice as those numbers are, if\u00a0you are not\u00a0keeping track of what it is you are owed, you run the risk of not getting paid for the time you worked.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The only way the soccer ref coordinator knows that you have, indeed, reffed\u00a0a game, is through the game cards.\u00a0 These game cards are signed by each referee then turned in sometime after each game.\u00a0\u00a0But things happen.\u00a0 Maybe\u00a0the card gets lost under the seat of your car.\u00a0 In which case, it doesn’t get turned in and you don’t receive reffing\u00a0money for that game.\u00a0 Besides, if other kids reffed the same game and you are responsible for turning in the card, they lose out, too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
So when I saw the blank stares looking at me after I asked if they were sure they were getting paid for all their games, I knew I had failed in teaching them how to keep track.\u00a0 I should have had them keep a list of\u00a0each game they reffed and the amount they received for each one.\u00a0\u00a0 That way\u00a0it would be a quick once-over when the checks arrived.<\/p>\n
I suppose they could go back over the season and try and figure it out.\u00a0 They probably won’t.<\/p>\n
