{"id":4086,"date":"2016-03-09T08:47:27","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T16:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=4086"},"modified":"2016-03-09T08:47:27","modified_gmt":"2016-03-09T16:47:27","slug":"rubber-stampin-math-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=4086","title":{"rendered":"Rubber Stampin&#8217; Math &#8211; Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I know it&#8217;s not quite spring yet but I&#8217;m a little anxious for it to start. \u00a0It seems like it&#8217;s been a long winter. \u00a0So, to encourage spring to get a move-on, I did a little spring cleaning. \u00a0And that&#8217;s when I re-discovered my drawer full of rubber stamps and colorful stamp pads.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubber-stamp1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-4095 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubber-stamp1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"rubber stamp1\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubber-stamp1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubber-stamp1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubber-stamp1-450x450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubber-stamp1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These stamps and stamp pads were a staple in my third, fourth, and fifth grade classroom. \u00a0And when I ran centers in K-2, I used them there, too. \u00a0I loved how I was able to touch on so many different math concepts in a way that was fun for kids.<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;m going to share with you, in two parts, some of the simple, fun, and mathematically powerful activities I did using these fabulous materials.<\/p>\n<p>Part 1: \u00a0Equations, Expressions, and Arrays<\/p>\n<p>Every opportunity I get I try to put students in charge of creating their own math problems. \u00a0It&#8217;s more interesting for them that way. \u00a0Plus I learn a lot about their math personalities. \u00a0Do they know how to create a problem and then solve it? \u00a0Do they stick with simple and easy problems or do they push themselves a little? \u00a0Can they explain why they did what they did?<\/p>\n<p>So one day in Kindergarten during centers I pulled out the rubber stamps and stamp pads and had students create their own equations and expressions. \u00a0They loved it! \u00a0It was a new material for them plus they got to complete the task the way they wanted. The best part for me was that I got to observe how they did it. \u00a0A win\/win!<\/p>\n<p>Below are examples of what some of their work looked like. \u00a0For the bottom activity sheets I asked them to come up with a story to describe one of their expressions to me. \u00a0Since my time was limited and my focus was on the math and not the writing, I did the writing. \u00a0The bottom left story reads, <em>&#8220;1 ladybug went to the park. \u00a0Then 5 other bugs came to play. \u00a0How many bugs were at the park?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubberstamp3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-4096 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubberstamp3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"rubberstamp3\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubberstamp3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubberstamp3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubberstamp3-450x450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/rubberstamp3.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In second and third grade, I had students create arrays.
