{"id":3889,"date":"2015-05-06T14:05:42","date_gmt":"2015-05-06T22:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=3889"},"modified":"2015-05-06T14:06:07","modified_gmt":"2015-05-06T22:06:07","slug":"3889","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=3889","title":{"rendered":"The Equals Sign:  CCSSM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love activities that are super simple yet pack a powerful punch. \u00a0This is one of those. \u00a0And the good news is, it can be done no matter what grade level you teach which means it lends itself well to differentiation. \u00a0But the even better news is that it covers a lot of standards in a fun and engaging way.<\/p>\n<p>The main objective, however, is to teach the concept of equality in equations. (I should mention that one of my pet peeves is calling equations <em>number sentences<\/em>. \u00a0If you&#8217;re interested in why, I explain it\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=551\" target=\"_blank\" shape=\"rect\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>But the basic idea of an equation is that both sides of the equals sign need to have the same value in order for it to be considered valid, or true. \u00a0Too often young students think the equals sign means <em>and the answer is<\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s such an important foundational idea in algebra that it&#8217;s included as one of the Common Core Standards in First Grade:<\/p>\n<p>Work with addition and subtraction equations.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><a shape=\"rect\">CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.7<\/a><\/div>\n<div>Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>So here&#8217;s an easy and fun way to underscore the equality idea. \u00a0Choose 15 &#8211; 20 numbers and create two expression cards for each number. \u00a0Pair students up and hand out one expression card per pair. \u00a0The students need to go around the room and find their matching expression. \u00a0Here&#8217;s an example of some I made for K-2:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3890 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart3-e1430949725494.jpg\" alt=\"pocket chart3\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart3-e1430949725494.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart3-e1430949725494-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart3-e1430949725494-450x600.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>See how easy it is to adapt this to any grade level. \u00a0You can even deliberately hand out the expressions depending on the level of the students in your class. \u00a0So if you have student who need a challenge, give them more complicated expressions.<\/p>\n<p>Here are ones I&#8217;ve used in upper elementary:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3891 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart1-e1430949799745.jpg\" alt=\"pocket chart1\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart1-e1430949799745.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart1-e1430949799745-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pocket-chart1-e1430949799745-450x600.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice how the three equations at the bottom require that students know the order of operations!
