{"id":3615,"date":"2013-11-07T14:34:13","date_gmt":"2013-11-07T22:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?p=3615"},"modified":"2013-11-07T14:49:44","modified_gmt":"2013-11-07T22:49:44","slug":"family-math-night-what-do-you-notice-posters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=3615","title":{"rendered":"Family Math Night &#8216;What do you notice&#8217; Posters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love the idea of having at least one <em>What do you notice?<\/em> posters at our Family Math Night events. \u00a0 I started it <a href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?p=2938\" target=\"_blank\">last year<\/a> when I did an event at an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">IB school<\/a> and the two teachers I was working with wanted to tie in some of the IB inquiry philosophy. \u00a0It was really fun to watch the kids standing in front of the posters trying to &#8216;notice&#8217; things. \u00a0Besides, they got an extra Estimation Jar slip for writing something on the poster. \u00a0So they were incentivized.<\/p>\n<p>Since we are launching our newest <a title=\"Family Math Night\" href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/kidsmath\/#.UnwUdPmsjlM\" target=\"_blank\">Family Math Night<\/a> kit, Gellin&#8217; with Geometry, I wanted to tie this year&#8217;s <em>What do you notice?<\/em> question into geometry. \u00a0Below are the ideas I came up with. \u00a0The first one reflects the self-similarity of fractals. \u00a0The second one ties into one of the Gellin&#8217; stations: \u00a0Fraction Action.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;ll be fun to see some of the things the kids notice. \u00a0I&#8217;m always amazed at what they come up with. \u00a0And that&#8217;s what&#8217;s so much fun about these questions&#8230;they allow for creative, outside-the-box thinking&#8230;the kind of thinking we want to develop in all of our students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSCN1633.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3616\" alt=\"DSCN1633\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSCN1633-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSCN1633-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSCN1633-450x337.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSCN1660.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3617\" alt=\"DSCN1660\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSCN1660-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSCN1660-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSCN1660-450x337.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I love the idea of having at least one What do you notice?
