Are they itching to see how far they can jump or throw objects?  In honor of the 2012 Summer Olympics, we\u2019re going to give our kids a chance to compete in their own track and field events\u2026and sneak in a little math while we\u2019re at it!  <\/p>\n<p>For each of the events below, use masking tape to indicate the starting line.  Give kids an opportunity to practice each of the events before the competition.  Then show them how to use the tape measure.  For young kids, measuring in inches is fine; you may need to help them read the numbers.  Older kids can convert the inches to feet.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=2326\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2326\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2012-08-07-15.46.19-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Olympics\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2012-08-07-15.46.19-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/2012-08-07-15.46.19-450x337.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You will need:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tMasking tape for the starting line.<br \/>\n\u2022\tA tape measure or yard stick.<br \/>\n\u2022\tPlastic straws for the Javelin Throw.  Option: older kids can use chop sticks.<br \/>\n\u2022\tSmall soft balls for the Shot Put.  Koosh balls and water balls* work well as they don\u2019t roll too far after the throw.<br \/>\n\u2022\tPaper plates for the Discus Throw.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long Jump: <\/strong> With their feet on the starting line, kids perform a standing jump.  Use a small piece of masking tape to mark the back of the closest heel to the start line then help them measure the distance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Javelin Throw:<\/strong>  With their feet on the starting line, kids throw the straw.  Measure from the start line to the end of the straw closest to the line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shot Put: <\/strong> With their feet on the starting line, kids throw the ball.  Measure from the start line to the edge of the ball closest to the line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discus Throw:<\/strong>  With their feet on the starting line, kids toss the paper plate.  Measure from the start line to the edge of the plate closest to the line.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the friendly competition, hand out medals to each competitor.  The Dollar Store is a good place to find cheap, but nice, medals. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Variation for older kids:<\/strong>  If there is more than one \u201ccompetitor\u201d, have them predict their results in feet\/inches before each \u201ccompetition\u201d.  To give them a benchmark, show them how long one foot (12 inches) is.
