During America Saves Week (February) or Financial Literacy Month (April), I like to have small groups of students rotate through the Money Jar Center.  I&#8217;ve also done it as a whole class activity with second grade and up.  <\/p>\n<p>Students do have the option of using a hot glue gun.  I go over the rules very carefully.  Even so, there are usually a handful who choose not to use the glue gun.  And that&#8217;s perfectly okay because there are a variety of other objects for them to use like colored sharpies, foam stickers, and regular stickers.<\/p>\n<p>For directions on making the Money Jars:<\/p>\n<p>Materials needed:<br \/>\n-mason jar<br \/>\n-hot glue gun and glue sticks<br \/>\n-fabric scraps<br \/>\n-cardboard<br \/>\n-\u201djewels\u201d<br \/>\n-stickers<br \/>\n-pom poms<br \/>\n-permanent markers<br \/>\n-ribbon<br \/>\n-any other fun stuff to place on jar<\/p>\n<p>Using a mason jar for this activity is important because it allows your child to watch her money \u201cgrow\u201d.  In addition, the lids are perfect for customizing a slot where the coins\/bills will go through.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=1960\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1960\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/money-jars-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"money jars\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/money-jars-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/money-jars-450x337.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/money-jars.jpg 1906w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1.Remove the metal circular lid and cut a cardboard circle the same size.  Throw away the circular metal lid.<br \/>\n2.Cut a slot in the cardboard large enough for a quarter to easily fit through.<br \/>\n3.Use a large enough piece of square fabric to cover the cardboard and have plenty left over to spill over the top of the jar.<br \/>\n4.Cut a slot in the fabric to match the slot in the cardboard.<br \/>\n5.Have your child\/students decorate their jar.  You can squeeze the glue from the glue gun onto the jar for her.  Or, if you prefer, there are plenty of non glue-gun materials you can use to decorate.<br \/>\n6.Glue the ribbon around the rim of the lid.<br \/>\n7.Screw the lid on tight and begin dropping in coins!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learning to save money is an important life skill.
