{"id":172,"date":"2009-05-21T20:03:17","date_gmt":"2009-05-22T04:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kidnexions.wordpress.com\/?p=172"},"modified":"2009-05-21T20:03:17","modified_gmt":"2009-05-22T04:03:17","slug":"bumper-sticker-i-stop-for-lemonade-stands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=172","title":{"rendered":"Bumper Sticker: I Break for Lemonade Stands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, this one&#8217;s too cute.\u00a0 John walked in from work this afternoon holding two teeny paper cups.\u00a0 And I mean teeny.\u00a0 The ones really young kids use after they&#8217;ve brushed their teeth.\u00a0 The ones that hold maybe two ounces of liquid.\u00a0 He held them up to me and said, &#8220;I stopped for orange juice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We are big believers in kids getting a chance to exercise their entrepreneurial spirits.\u00a0 And it usually starts with the infamous lemonade stand, or in this case, orange juice stand.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen kids who I would never consider the lemonade stand type out on the corner selling their brew.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I really\u00a0feel that kids are born with a desire, and the gift, to do something constructive that\u00a0can earn\u00a0them a little extra money while having fun.\u00a0 Somehow, slowly over time\u00a0this desire\u00a0disappears.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kids are optimists.\u00a0 Because of this they tend to think they can conquer the world.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not a bad thing.\u00a0 But often, parents need to bring kids back to reality.\u00a0 <em>I&#8217;m not sure how to help you build a teleporter<\/em> is one time\u00a0I remember having to do a reality check on Nathan.\u00a0 How do you explain to a first grader that having voices travel over the airwaves is a little different than having a person travel through space and time.<\/p>\n<p>But because kids are optimists I also think we need to take the time to help them think through some of their ideas.\u00a0 Maybe if we do that, kids won&#8217;t slowly give up that entrepreneurial spirit they seem to be born with.\u00a0 Not all their ideas will come to fruition, but you may find that you&#8217;re pleasantly surprised.\u00a0 Like I was when Ryan decided to start a soda-making business.<\/p>\n<p>So the next time you see kids having a lemonade\/orange juice stand&#8230;
