With absolute seriousness, Ryan glanced up from the kitchen table and wanted to know what ‘red ink’ they were talking about.\u00a0 After all, he said, he has only ever seen the morning paper covered in black ink.<\/p>\n
On his quest to find the comic section this morning Ryan stumbled across the\u00a0title of an article on the front page, The Red Ink Flows, <\/em>from which came his query.\u00a0 Even if he had read the words\u00a0that followed…deficit could hit $21.3 billion…<\/em> it probably wouldn’t have made a difference.\u00a0\u00a0 How could he know that red ink<\/em> (in the red) refers to a loss?\u00a0 It’s not exactly intuitive.<\/p>\n Which made me think\u00a0about other money phrases, or idioms.\u00a0 Things like\u00a0money doesn’t grow on trees, <\/em>saving for a rainy day, made of money, penny pinching.<\/em>..\u00a0 As adults, we’ve been saying them so long we tend not to think too much about the literal meaning.\u00a0\u00a0But taken literally, they’re hilarious.<\/p>\n Which then gave\u00a0me an idea for a fun lesson to do with my money students…having\u00a0them\u00a0represent a money idiom of their choice\u00a0through a drawing.\u00a0 Not only will it be fun to draw something ridiculous, but it’s the perfect opportunity to introduce the meaning behind the phrases.\u00a0 There’s wisdom, or at the very least some interesting conversation,\u00a0to be found in those words.\u00a0<\/p>\n See if you can guess some of these “illustrations”:<\/p>\n
