{"id":1150,"date":"2011-10-08T16:11:08","date_gmt":"2011-10-08T16:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kidnexions.com\/blog\/?p=1150"},"modified":"2011-10-11T16:12:27","modified_gmt":"2011-10-11T16:12:27","slug":"money-messages-we-send-our-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.familymathnight.com\/blog\/?p=1150","title":{"rendered":"Money Messages We Send Our Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever thought about how kids learn to speak a pretty complex language?\u00a0 And when I say &#8216;speak&#8217;, I mean all the intricacies that go along with it&#8230;body language, inflection, nuance, &#8230;in addition to vocabulary and sentence structure.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty amazing feat and, yet,\u00a0we all learn how to do it pretty seamlessly and without formal instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Much of it happens indirectly.\u00a0\u00a0Our kids are\u00a0absorbing what we do &#8211; it&#8217;s how they learn to operate in the world.\u00a0\u00a0And while absorbing the nuances of spoken language can be quite useful, our kids are also\u00a0absorbing lots of other messages we may not even know we&#8217;re sending, good or bad&#8230;how we react when something unexpected happens, how we deal with a difficult client (or family member!), how we handle ethical issues such as cheating&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #00ff33;\">The Money Connection:<\/span><\/strong> By the same token, our kids are absorbing our\u00a0money messages&#8230;good or bad.\u00a0 Spend a few moments and reflect on some of the messages you may be sending your kids and think about how your kids may be interpreting them.\u00a0 Ask yourself&#8230;<\/p>\n<table id=\"content_LETTER.BLOCK9\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\">\n<ul>\n<li>Do\u00a0I avoid talking about money to my kids?<\/li>\n<li>Do\u00a0I ever say things like\u00a0<em>money doesn&#8217;t grow on trees<\/em>?<\/li>\n<li>Do I encourage my kids to be thankful for what they have?<\/li>\n<li>Do\u00a0I argue about money in front of the kids?<\/li>\n<li>How do\u00a0I react when something unexpected and expensive happens?<\/li>\n<li>Do\u00a0I value saving money?<\/li>\n<li>How do I handle a solicitor coming to the front door?<\/li>\n<li>Are my kids secure that all their needs will be met?<\/li>\n<li>Am I an impulsive shopper?\u00a0 Do I hoard all my money?<\/li>\n<li>What do I choose to spend my money on?<\/li>\n<li>Do I talk more positively or more negatively about money?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Decide\u00a0on\u00a0the money messages\u00a0you want your kids to receive\u00a0then open up an honest, age-appropriate\u00a0discussion with them.\u00a0\u00a0Conversation is a great way to develop healthy money attitudes in our kids&#8230;and ourselves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever thought about how kids learn to speak a pretty complex language?\u00a0 And when I say &#8216;speak&#8217;, I mean all the intricacies that go along with it&#8230;body language, inflection, nuance, &#8230;in addition to vocabulary and sentence structure.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty amazing feat and, yet,\u00a0we all learn how to do it pretty seamlessly and without formal instruction.
