Students use sticky dots to create a caterpillar with a head and 10 body parts. They add eyes, a mouth, and antennae to the head. Then they add two legs to each body part. Finally, they skip count by 2s and write in the number. For the younger ones, I provide a 0-110 number chart for them to use as they write in the numbers. . . . Oops…I didn’t catch this one in time. Her caterpillar is skip counting…
Partners traced each other’s feet. Then we used Unifix cubes to determine the area. (Partial squares got a little tricky but we did a little fraction work.) Then table teams grouped their Unifix into tens and ones for some place value practice. The kids LOVED that they got to take off their shoes. (Okay, there was one who wasn’t so keen on it…and there were a lot of laces that needed to be tied before recess!)

Kids who have strong number sense understand what numbers are, how they relate to each other, and the affects that different operations have on them. These kids can easily compose and decompose numbers and are able to make reasonable estimates making computation much easier. In other words, kids with strong number sense are comfortable with numbers. And when kids are comfortable with numbers, math becomes much easier. The good news is, helping our children develop a strong sense of numbers…
