Our second family math night kit, Math Medley, is filled with fun, hands-on activities and games that get kids to explore a variety of topics in math. From geometry to numbers to data analysis, kids will be engaged in doing and representing math in different ways. The kit is designed for grades K-5 and serves 120 students and their parents/caregivers. We have booster packs for larger schools! Here’s an easy activity to help your kindergartner practice her numeral writing skills. Simply fill a cookie tray with enough salt to cover the bottom and let your child work on writing the numerals. After each one, gently shake the tray and it’s ready for her to write a new one. Add glitter to the salt to make it more fun!

Skip counting – Multiples of 2

Students use sticky dots to create a caterpillar with a head and 10 body parts. They add eyes, a mouth, and antennae to the head. Then they add two legs to each body part. Finally, they skip count by 2s and write in the number. For the younger ones, I provide a 0-110 number chart for them to use as they write in the numbers. . . . Oops…I didn’t catch this one in time. Measuring our Feet – A Fun First Grade Activity

Partners traced each other’s feet. Then we used Unifix cubes to determine the area. (Partial squares got a little tricky but we did a little fraction work.) Then table teams grouped their Unifix into tens and ones for some place value practice. The kids LOVED that they got to take off their shoes. (Okay, there was one who wasn’t so keen on it…and there were a lot of laces that needed to be tied before recess!)
