What Do You Notice? Numbers in Square Grids

Skills

Primary students (K-2): number recognition, counting, shapes, even/odd numbers

Intermediate students (3-5): even/odd numbers, multiplication/division fact families

Mathematical Background

I sorted the numbers in each grid by evens and odds. Then I created rows of division/multiplication facts. I decided to start with the quotient in the left column because I knew it would take students a little longer to figure it out.

Another angle is to look at the squares themselves. How many total squares are in each grid?

Sample Student Responses

"odd (to the left) even (to the right)"

"Column C = Column A/Column B"

"I see numbers."

"Each row is a multiplication fact family."
