About Math Unity

Math Unity was founded on the idea that kids learn best when schools and families partner together around the common goal of educating our children. Our primary focus at Math Unity is to support these partnerships by providing ready-to-go Family Math Night kits that get parents and kids actively engaged in fun, creative and unique, standards-based math activities. We believe that families communicating about math in a hands-on environment allows for deeper understanding of important concepts and contributes to more powerful learning experiences.

Karyn Hodgens

I have been involved in elementary mathematics education for over 25 years. It is my passion to create meaningful and relevant activities that resonate with kids' interests. I am also passionate about involving parents in the educational process. When I'm not thinking about new activities to include in a future Family Math Night kit, I can be found hiking or reading mystery novels.

John Hodgens

Co-founding both Kidnexions and Math Unity was based on a strong desire to improve child learning through fun and engaging, meaningful and relevant activities. I have utilized my 20 years of software development experience developing the KidsSave software program, designing our web site and providing systems development and technological support. In my spare time, I enjoy running and golfing - but not at the same time :-)

Curriculum Consultants

Rebecca Burke (Grades K-1)

I have been teaching in the Rocklin District for 19 years, 18 of which I have been a multi-age teacher in the kindergarten, first, and second grade world. Teaching is definitely my passion. It is exciting to see students grow and develop into life long learners. I am married and have two boys. My hobbies include hiking, gardening, and reading (whenever my busy schedule allows me). I also love to go to the movies and out to dinner with my family. I especially like going to Tahoe and enjoying the beautiful mountains.

Janet Hardt (Special Ed, Grade 2)

I have been teaching for over 20 years. One of my favorite passions to do with students is gardening. There's a lot of math that happens in the garden! When I'm not in the classroom or garden, I'm in the kitchen trying a new recipe.

Carole Durbin (Grades 2-3)

I've been teaching in the Rocklin School District for fourteen years. I've taught second and third grade. I graduated from CSU Sacramento and recently went back to school to ear a Masters Degree in curriculum and instruction. Even though I teach all subjects, I have a passion and enthusiasm for teaching math. When I'm not teaching I enjoy reading, swimming, and spending time with my two beautiful yellow labs, Bella and Gidget.

Kathy Claus (Grades 4-5)

I have been teaching a fourth and fifth grade loop for over 14 years. I enjoy spending two years with my students because it creates a special bond. I also love the curriculum at both grades.
